The Last Light of Miravel

A One-Shot Adventure for 4–5 Players · Levels 3–5 · 3–4 Hours

A complete, ready-to-run adventure with 3 memorable NPCs, read-aloud text, encounter guides, and multiple endings.
This is a free taste of what Loresmith crafts. The full pack has five more like this.

◆Adventure Overview

The village of Miravel sits at the edge of the Thornwood, famous for its eternal lantern — a magical beacon that has kept the forest's darkness at bay for centuries. Three days ago, the lantern flickered and died. Shadows now creep from the treeline each night, closer and closer. The village elder has sent word for heroes.

The players must discover why the lantern failed, navigate the politics of a village in crisis, venture into the Thornwood to find the stolen Heartstone that powers the lantern, and confront the being who took it — a fallen fey knight who believes she is saving the forest from the “burning light.”

Tone & Theme

Tone: Mystery into exploration into moral dilemma. Not a simple dungeon crawl — the “villain” has sympathetic motivations.

Key Theme: Light vs. dark isn't good vs. evil. The lantern protects Miravel but harms the deep forest. There is no perfectly clean solution.

Act 1The Dying Village

Arrival

Read Aloud

The road to Miravel winds through farmland gone gray. Crops that should be green with spring sit withered in the fields. As the village comes into view, you notice something wrong immediately — the famous tower at the village center stands dark. No golden light. No warm glow. Just cold stone against a bruised sky. Villagers huddle near their doors, casting nervous glances toward the treeline where the Thornwood looms like a wall of black teeth.

Key Locations in Miravel

The Dead Tower

A 40-foot stone tower at the village center. The lantern chamber at the top holds an empty iron cradle where the Heartstone once sat.

Investigation DC 12No signs of forced entry — whoever took the stone had a key or came through the walls.
Nature/Arcana DC 14Faint traces of fey magic: flower petals made of moonlight, now fading.

The Weary Ox Tavern

Where the party can gather rumors. Villagers share conflicting stories: some blame a traveling merchant who left two days ago, others whisper about shapes in the woods.

DM Note

The barkeep, a half-elf named Darla, says she saw a figure in silver armor walking into the Thornwood the night the lantern died.

Elder Thessa's Cottage

Meeting place with the quest-giver. See the NPC section below for full details on Elder Thessa.

◆Non-Player Characters

Three fully fleshed-out NPCs ready to drop into the adventure. Each has motivations, secrets, and dialogue you can read straight from the page.

🛡️

Elder Thessa Brightmoor

Quest-giver · Moral compass

Race/ClassHuman, 70s, former adventurer (retired ranger)
AppearanceSilver hair in a practical braid, weathered hands that still look strong. Walks with a carved oak staff. Eyes are sharp despite her age — she misses nothing.
PersonalityPragmatic and direct. No patience for self-pity. She's seen worse — but not by much.
SecretShe knows more than she lets on. Forty years ago, she helped install the Heartstone and made a pact with the fey of the Thornwood — the lantern would burn, but the village would never expand into the forest. The village broke that pact last year when the new mayor authorized logging in the forest's edge. Thessa fears she knows exactly why the light went out.
Key Dialogue

“I won't dress this in pretty words. Without the Heartstone, the lantern is dead iron. The shadows get bolder each night. We've lost two goats already, and last night something scratched at Widow Carren's shutters. You have maybe three days before something worse comes.”

When pressed about the fey:

“I made a promise to the Thornwood, long ago. The village was supposed to keep its end. We didn't. I can't say I blame the forest for being angry — but that doesn't mean I'll let it swallow us whole.”

🦌

Sablehorn

Antagonist with sympathetic motives

Race/ClassEladrin (autumn aspect), former Knight of the Summer Court
AppearanceTall and gaunt, wearing tarnished silver armor covered in living moss. Antlers grow from her temples, wrapped in dead ivy. Her eyes glow faint amber — warm, not menacing. She carries a longsword made of dark wood.
PersonalityMelancholy and principled. She genuinely believes she's doing the right thing. She's not cruel — she's grieving. The Thornwood is dying because the lantern's light burns the deep roots, and she considers the forest her sacred charge.
SecretThe Heartstone is slowly poisoning her. Fey were never meant to hold raw light magic. She has days before it consumes her, but she'd rather die than let the forest suffer more.
Key Dialogue

“You call it a beacon. A protector. Do you know what it is to the Thornwood? A wound that never closes. For two hundred years, the deep roots have burned. The heartwood blackens. The old spirits fade. Your village's safety was bought with my forest's slow death.”

If the players propose a compromise:

“You would ask me to trust humans again? The last promise lasted forty years before your axes broke it. Why should the next promise be any different?”

🍄

Finn Copperkettle

Comic relief · Unlikely guide

Race/ClassHalfling, mushroom forager and self-proclaimed 'Thornwood expert'
AppearancePerpetually muddy boots, a vest with too many pockets, each stuffed with different mushrooms. Has a pet cricket named "Chancellor" that sits on his shoulder.
PersonalityCheerful, reckless, talks too much. Knows the forest paths better than anyone because he's too oblivious to be afraid. Accidentally useful.
SecretHe's been trading with the forest sprites for years — leaving offerings of honey and getting rare mushrooms in return. The sprites have gone silent since the Heartstone was taken. He's more worried than he lets on.
Key Dialogue

“Oh, the Thornwood? Terrifying place. Absolutely terrifying. I go in three times a week. You just have to know which mushrooms are friendly and which ones want you dead. Well — none of them want you dead exactly. Some just don't care if you die. Big difference.”

Act 2Into the Thornwood

Read Aloud

The Thornwood swallows the sunlight within twenty paces. The canopy above is so thick that noon looks like dusk. The air tastes different here — damp earth, old leaves, and something electric, like the moment before a storm. The path Finn leads you down is barely a path at all — more like a suggestion between ancient oaks whose trunks are wider than houses. Strange fungus pulses with soft blue light along the roots. Somewhere deep in the dark, something large moves through the underbrush — and then stops. Listening.

Encounter 1: The Thornwood Guardians

Combat / Social Encounter

Three Twig Blights and one Dryad block the path at a ring of standing stones. The dryad, named Ashewick, demands to know why mortals enter the wood. She is hostile but not murderous.

⚔ Combat Approach

The blights attack immediately. The dryad uses Entangle and Tree Stride to harass from a distance. Medium difficulty for level 3–4.

⚓ Social Approach

Persuasion DC 15 — mention Thessa's name and the DC drops to 12. Mention the pact and Ashewick will grudgingly guide them to the Hollow Court.

“The knight is not your enemy. The broken promise is.”

Encounter 2: The Blighted Clearing

Exploration / Puzzle

The path leads to a clearing where the trees are visibly sick — bark peeling, leaves black, sap running like dark blood. In the center, three stone pedestals each hold a dead animal (a bird, a fox, a deer) arranged like offerings.

Nature/Arcana DC 13These are memorial markers — the fey mourn creatures killed by the lantern's expanding light.
Puzzle Solution

To open the path forward, the players must show respect for the forest's grief. Accept any genuine gesture of empathy: placing flowers on the pedestals, speaking words of mourning, pouring water on the roots. Finn suggests leaving some of his mushrooms as an offering.

If the party tries to push through: the forest tangles around them (DC 14 STR to break free, 1d6 bludgeoning damage, and they're deposited back at the clearing entrance).

Act 3The Hollow Court

Read Aloud

The trees open into a vast natural cathedral. A hollow hill rises before you, its surface covered in luminous moss that casts everything in pale green light. An archway of woven branches frames the entrance, and beyond it you can see the glow — warm and golden, unmistakable. The Heartstone. It sits on a throne of living roots at the center of the hollow, pulsing like a heartbeat. And beside it stands Sablehorn, hand on her sword, amber eyes fixed on you with something that looks less like anger and more like exhaustion.

The Confrontation

DM Note

Sablehorn will not attack first. She will talk. She wants the party to understand. Use her dialogue from the NPC section and let the scene breathe. This is the emotional heart of the adventure.

⚔ If the Party Attacks

Sablehorn fights defensively. Use the Knight stat block with modifications: +2 AC from the root throne, resistance to radiant damage, and bonus action root grapple (DC 14 STR to escape).

She fights until reduced to half HP, then offers to parley.

⚓ If the Party Negotiates

This is the intended path. The core dilemma: the Heartstone can either power the lantern (protecting Miravel, slowly killing the deep forest) OR remain in the Thornwood (saving the forest, leaving Miravel vulnerable).

Possible Resolutions

The Compromise

Best Ending

Persuasion DC 16 (DC 13 if the party showed respect in the Blighted Clearing). The party proposes the Heartstone be returned but the lantern dimmed — half power, enough to protect Miravel but not burn the deep roots. The village must also renew the pact: no more logging in the Thornwood. Sablehorn agrees but demands a mortal witness to the new pact.

Return the Stone by Force

The party defeats Sablehorn and takes the stone. Miravel is saved, but the forest darkens further. As they leave, the trees whisper: “The debt remembers.” Open hook for a sequel.

Leave the Stone

The party sides with Sablehorn. Miravel must find another way to protect itself. Thessa is heartbroken but understands. The village will survive, but it will change.

Destroy the Stone

A burst of light heals the forest but removes Miravel's protection permanently. Sablehorn weeps — not with joy, but grief. “You've freed us all. I only wish freedom didn't always taste like loss.”

◆Conclusion

Returning to Miravel (Compromise Ending)

Read Aloud

The walk back through the Thornwood feels different. The trees still loom, the shadows still creep — but something has shifted. The dryad Ashewick watches from a distance and, for the first time, does not hide. Finn chatters the entire way back, already planning his next mushroom expedition.

When Miravel comes into view, Elder Thessa is waiting at the village gate. She looks at the Heartstone in your hands, then at the forest behind you, and nods slowly. “You found the harder answer,” she says. “The right ones usually are.”

That night, the lantern burns again — softer than before, more amber than gold. But it burns. And in the Thornwood, for the first time in two centuries, the deep roots stop aching.
